Maddy Lowman, PhD, LCMHCA

Contract Therapist

Hello! My name is Maddy and I’m a native to the low country of South Carolina. and I’m a big fan of people, cats, lattes, and running. Some of my clinical experiences range from working in an integrated health care setting, nonprofit agencies, a college counseling center, and private practice. I have experience teaching and supervising counselors-in-training at the master’s level, and feel passionate about helping others through some of their biggest challenges through the counseling process.

My approach to therapy is collaborative and I use several approaches depending on the needs of my clients. I’m largely informed by my training in Somatic Experiencing® (SE)- I believe that my clients have every resource they need to benefit from healing and that my job is to help them gently become more embodied and flexible in how they experience their lives.

Therapist’s Qualifications and Clinical Background

I received my MS and later my PhD in Counseling and Counselor Education from UNCG, and practice as a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor Associate in North Carolina. I have extensive training in the physiology of stress responses and how to integrate nervous system processes into counseling, and the bulk of my clinical work has been with survivors of trauma. Attention to physiology offers a unique way to support clients in resolving their presenting concerns and symptoms, yet clients are much more than nervous systems: they have swelling hearts, timeless wisdom, remarkable resilience, and incredible capacity for healing themselves. I’ve found that the combination of attention to the nervous system and appreciation for the resilience inherent in all people is an exceptionally powerful approach to counseling.
